This is a pretty solid Canadian example of a winter ale, a style which seems to be a rapidly gaining popularity among craft brewers from coast to coast. I like this one because it's a bit different than most, with less emphasis on spice, and concentrating more on some flavour in the body.
The first thing you'll notice about this beer is the characteristic look and aroma of a winter ale: dark brown to black with a spicy, warm, and inviting nose. The beer itself is very smooth and thick with an almost porter-like quality, but the most conspicuous characteristic of this beer is the nice hint of vanilla with every sip. It also has a decently complex maltiness to it with some of the old familiar tastes of chocolate, coffee and caramel. There is a bit of spice on the back end but not nearly as much as most other winter warmers that I've had. Pretty solid mouth-feel here, with a smooth rich quality. As you would expect from a winter warmer beer such as this, Lions Winter Ale tastes a bit more mature, and has a smoother mouth-feel on tap.
I've had this beer in a can and on tap, and must say that if you get a chance to try a pint, definitely go for it. A nice winter sipping beer.
