lake of Bays has hit the bulls-eye with Spark House Red Ale, and it has become one of my go-to brews because it's the perfect summertime beer for someone like me, who prefers dark beers but needs something crisp and refreshing when it's hot. Spark House fits the bill perfectly.
Spark House is a relatively simple beer, and while it may not blow you away, it has the great combination of ultra smooth drinkability and robust flavour that makes it extremely addictive. It pours a nice deep red colour and the aroma is one of malty sweetness. The flavour profile is much the same, as it is dominated by an incredible malty caramel and toffee sweetness which is doubly noticeable if you drink one of these after something hoppy. Despite this big sweet flavour profile, it really is nicely balanced, as it does become a little more complex mid sip when some bready and grainy flavours emerge, then it finishes dry with just the slightest hint of hop bitterness. Nothing is overdone, and the mouth-feel is smooth, but also crisp and refreshing. I think what sets this beer apart for me is that it serves nicely as a hot weather beer; it's refreshing and easy to drink, but it also has enough flavour to keep you interested. Spark House is a great cottage beer, and I thanked my lucky stars for 9 straight days because it's available at my favourite summer destination, Manitoulin Island, which doesn't usually have the greatest craft beer selection.
Pour this one into a glass and enjoy it, or chug it straight out of the bottle. It really makes no difference, as this beer really does aim to please every time.
