Mill Street Organic Lager gets beat up pretty badly on user review blogs, and I've heard it be called anything from "good" to "piss" on more than one occasion. You get morons out there saying dumb shit like "it needs way more hops" even though this style of beer doesn't call for that type of bitterness. That's like buying a 2 door car and complaining that it doesn't have 4 doors. I can kinda see where people are coming from as this beer isn't likely to blow you away, but to be honest this is a really solid example of a Euro pilsner, and packs a huge flavour punch for such a light beer.
Sure, Original Organic Lager doesn't look like much but again, it's typical of the style. The aroma's are quite impressive however, and there's a sharp crispness to the big bready and grassy smells, with undertones of honey and copper. The flavour profile is along the same lines as fellow Ottawa blondes, Hogsback Vintage Lager and Beau's LugTread. It starts off mild and grainy with some light melon or apple notes, but finishes with that huge sour, bread-like back end. There is also some very noticeable sweetness in the body of this beer, giving it an extra dimension. That robust bready finish on a lager certainly isn't my cup of tea, but as I mentioned above, this beer has huge flavour for it's miniscule 4.2% ABV. The mouth-feel is very impressive, way fuller and creamier than most lagers, but also crisp and still refreshing, and was easily the most surprising aspect of this beer.
So while some would say that this is a bland beer with nothing memorable about it, I would counter by saying that it has way more flavour and complexity than most light, blonde lagers. Overall, Original Organic isn't a beer that I would ever buy but is one that definitely has it's merits, and along with the "organic" badge, is still a very relevant lager.
