Talk about a beer with the potential to be near and dear to my heart. The namesake for Swing Bridge, a blonde ale from Manitoulin Brewing Co., is a quirky old bridge that I drive across every year as I make my way from mainland Ontario to the world's largest freshwater island. Manitoulin Island is one of my favourite places in Canada, and the fact that it is now home to a brewery tickles my fancy indeed. In the end, Swing Bridge didn't exactly win me over, but it certainly is an interesting pint.
Swing Bridge is Manitoulin Brewing Co's first beer to hit the shelves of the LCBO, and I guess it's a safe choice, being an unoffensive and masses-pleasing blonde ale that drinks like a stiff lager. But if you are in any way alarmed by floating particulate in your beverage, then I submit that you will be extremely alarmed by a glass of Swing Bridge. This beer is seriously loaded from top to bottom with little suspended floaties that barely move, even after picking up the glass, tilting it to your lips, and setting it back down. It's like a goddamn magic show, almost unbeleivable. Anyways, the beer is pretty decent, kind of standard fare in the blonde ale category, not setting itself apart as being any better or any worse than any other of it's compadres. Its two distinguishing features would be a bit of hoppiness, and a nice peppery finish on the back end of every sip. It's got a nice full body and smooth mouth-feel that sets it apart from your typical lager, but other than that, it's hard to get extremely detailed or overly poetic about this beer.
At any rate, I encourage everyone to try a can for yourself, because it's from Manitoulin Island god-dammnit, and that's the only excuse you need.
