A great example of a real India Pale Ale. The term "IPA" is being thrown around way too much right now, to the point that the original spirit of an IPA has been mostly forgotten. A real IPA is a traditional English pale ale, fortified with some extra alcohol and hops, designed to survive the journey from England to India on a sailing ship. Also consider that a real pale ale is not really that pale, but actually an amber colour (they were called pale ales because when invented, they were much more golden and pale than their predecessors, which were dark and murky).
Wells is an English brewer that still brews its IPA in the original tradition, giving the beer the classic subtle extravagance of an English pale ale, but adding more hoppy character and boosting the alcohol content slightly from a traditional pale ale. Wells is what an IPA should taste like. If you've been drinking the mostly awful North American "IPA's" that pop out of the woodwork every 2o minutes, then sadly, you have no idea what a real IPA tastes like. Most of these IPA's have been over-hopped to the point of sheer fucking lunacy, causing you to taste nothing but hops hops and hops. And if you've been drinking Alexander Keith's, then you've been drinking a bland flavourless lager that's been falsely given the IPA moniker in an attempt to look cool. Realizing that they've made a mistake, mostly because the general beer drinking public is becoming educated on what they are drinking, Keith's has released their "Hop Series" beers in a desperate attempt to actually be producing a real IPA. If you've had one you'll notice the darker colour and the fact that they actually taste like something. They're actually pretty decent and worth a try.
Anyways, back to Wells IPA. It's damn good, so try it.
